I'm not an OSX-Guru but both Windows and Linux brings a command-line-ftp-client. Open a BASH (or shell or command-line or whatever - I don't know how Apple calls it). On the bash type "ftp" and return it, then in the ftp "open [ip-address]". If your server is running you should get the logon-procedu...

Can you use your FTP-Server with the command-line ftp-client? If not, there are more probs then just your wanted client.

normally you use the ftp-daemon as a server-only-software - no one else but the admin should be able to access the configuration-program.

is "unable to initialise" a cerberus-error? if so, your router can't be the problem but your network-interface.
