I am new to FTP, and reviewing the installation instructions. The computer I plan to use as the FTP server is located behind 2 routers. The first router connects to the internet, and is the DHCP server for the network. This router then cascades to a 2nd router in another building. That router is used to connect the computers in that building to the network and internet. It doesn’t provide DHCP; it’s being used as a switch / wireless access point. My question is – do I need to configure port forwarding in both routers, or just the first router?
If the second router is just acting as a switch and it’s really just one network, then no, you don’t have to enable port forwarding on the second router. You do have to enable port forwarding from the Internet facing router and redirect to the appropriate machine. If your second router is actually separating two networks then you may have to specifically allow the inbound traffic. It depends on how the network is configured. I would try it with just the Internet router configured for port forwarding first.
