Since enabling Use Windows Authentication and specifying my Active Directory domain I experience approximately a 2-3 minute freeze when opening the User Manager. The User Manager dialog window will grey out and show “Not Responding” during this time. It eventually wakes up and then clicking around between Users, Groups, AD Users, etc is smooth and stable. I’m guessing this is because Cerberus is enumerating all of our NT User Accounts in our domain.
Additional information – This is with the 18.104.22.168 version running on a modern Dell PowerEdge Server with Dual 3ghz Xeon processors, 8GB of RAM, Windows Server 2008 64-bit Standard Edition. We have a domain controller in the same local subnet and LAN segment, and I’ve verified it is using the local domain controller by checking the LOGONSERVER system variable.
Perhaps a progress bar could be added to Cerberus when in this configuration that shows progress, I would imagine some people would kill the process in this situation as most people are impatient, generally speaking.January 27, 2010 at 8:01 pm #35545
I think you are correct regarding the reason. We normally don’t test against a domain with a large number of users so we don’t notice this problem. We can definitely limit the NT user enumeration or move the processing into another thread. We already do that for domain detection.
Quick question, how many domain users do you have in your domain?
Thanks.January 27, 2010 at 9:01 pm #35546
I’ve changed the default Active Directory User manager to only retrieve the first 25 users and added an option to the User Manager to retrieve all users (in case you really want to enumerate all of the users). This should eliminate the large pause you see when you start the User Manager and have a huge number of users.
It will be included in our next minor release. I can send you a link to a special build if you are interested in the fix now. Otherwise, it is identical to version 22.214.171.124.January 27, 2010 at 9:09 pm #35547
5,348 objects. We are a company of about ~600 users, to help you understand the scale. So we aren’t that big, you probably should do something in future versions for large Active Directory domains.January 28, 2010 at 6:48 pm #35548 I’ve added a fix in that should remove the User Manager hang for large Active Directory listings.January 28, 2010 at 10:03 pm #35549 That was fast! Oh.. hmm, Cerberus doesn’t see any update available.January 29, 2010 at 2:06 am #35550 We haven’t posted it just yet. We are evaluating some other minor fixes before we release another version.January 29, 2010 at 4:19 am #35551 Great, I’ll look forward to it.February 3, 2010 at 5:45 pm #35552 Noticing a big improvement with v3.1.1. The User Manager hang now is approximately 5 seconds before it becomes responsive. MUCH better than the 3-4 minutes prior. I should mention that the “NT User Accounts” section of AD Users previously listed every object in our Active Directory domain, now it lists the first 6 objects only. This doesn’t matter in our implementation, but it may matter for others..
Anyway, thanks for addressing this so quickly!February 3, 2010 at 6:44 pm #35553
Thanks, glad it was helpful. There is now a checkbox below the list box to enumerate and list all of the Active Directory accounts if a user wishes.
