Can't launch GUI, when running as a Service

Post by gbrentnell » Wed Sep 27, 2006 12:41 pm

Just installed the newest version (2.4). Did the install as the Administrator of the computer, and when prompted "do you want to install for just this user or all users, I selected all users".

Set Cerberus FTP to run as a service. I see the Cerberus FTP service in the services list of my Windows 2003 server.

If the gui for Cerberus is open, I can't start the service from services.

If the gui is closed and cerberus is not running, I can start the service. If the service is started from services, I can't load the gui.

Certainly not the biggest deal in the world, but is a bit of a pain.

Nice software though.. Really like the user and server configuration.

*bump*

Did anyone find a solution for this? I'm in the same problem here and its really starting to tick me off - having to restart Cerberus every time I need to add a new user.

I'm in the same boat. Running on Windows 2003 Server SP1
Cerberus 2.45 installed as service.
GUI vs service seem to be mutually exclusive.

Connect to the console to use the GUI while the service is running.

Works a treat runing "mstsc.exe /console"! :P

Are there any plans to address this issue so that we can access the GUI from a non console terminal server session?

Regards,

Dan.

Yeah, this issue is becoming more of a problem, especially since the release of Vista.

The problem is that the GUI and the server are run in the same program. I'm working to separate the functionality of the server and the GUI so they will run in separate address spaces. This will allow the service to be run in the local system account, and the GUI to be run from the current user's account. Will fix the problem permanently.

I'm trying for the next release, but this is a huge change. I might have to push it off a few versions.

@Serin

Separating the GUI from the service would be reaaaallly great stuff, we are waiting for that really.

Currently we are running one instance of Cerberus on the server.. and when someones logs out somebody else that was logged on the console Cerberus goes offline (as it gets killed by forceful logout).

This is huge issue there. Also the fact you need to be on the "console" to control cerberus.

Cerberus would be great with GUI detached from service.

Best regards.
