I'm guessing you installed Cerberus FTP Server 4.0 with the option "Install as Service" selected during the install. That will install Cerberus FTP Server as a Service and start the service. During initial file creation, the files are created under the service account and therefore have local system permissions. If you later start Cerberus as a regular application then the file permissions might not allow the user starting the app to write to the files.

The solution is to start Cerberus as a service, change the file permissions on the setting files, or just delete the settings files and let Cerberus re-create them.

The directory you need to change permission on or delete (including subfolders) is

C:\Documents and Settings\Application Data\Cerberus LLC

on Windows Server 2003

I have a problem that may be related. It appears that some changes made with CerberusGUI which should be written out to interfaces.xml do not succed while the service is running.

Our virtual server has two NICs, Cerberus (4.0.8.3) is installed as a service, the server is running Windows Web Server 2008 R2.

I opened CerberusGUI.EXE -> Interfaces -> selected the interface 192.168.1.15, port 21 -> clicked ON both boxes in security -> pressed OK -> Exited CerberusGUI. The files uisettings.xml and settings.xml received updated time stamps, the file interfaces.xml was not updated - the sections in the XML are not updated either. requiresSecureControl>0</requiresSecureControl> <requiresSecureData>0</requiresSecureData> Rebooted the server. Opened CerberusGUI.EXE, checked on the interface - the boxes are unchecked again. There are no errors reported about saving config files.

Don't know what the protocol is for writing changes to the XML files when CerberusGUI is running as a service AND as a user mode program.

This is not a rights issue - the service is running as system, system has Full control. Administrators (me running CerberusGUI as a program) have Full control as well. I can open any of the XML files in notepad and save them.

Hello,

The protocol is a little different for interfaces. The interface-specific settings are only written out to file on service shutdown and a few other condition.

Adding on to my original post - after making the interface change in the GUI, the running CerberusFTP (windows service) does use the modified interface settings until the service shuts down and is restarted.

I guess the real question is whether this is a bug that needs to be fixed.

If it is not a bug, then the steps required for making a change to an interface are to 1. shut down the service 2. change the interface with CerberusGUI.exe 3. Save and exit the GUI, then 4. Start the service.

Thanks,

Andy B.

I just did some testing and there very well might be a bug here. The settings should get saved when the service is shutting down but my first test seemed to indicate that this wasn't happening. I will confirm and get a fix out this week if necessary.

Hello,

I uploaded 4.0.9.4 yesterday to correct the saving problem. You can grab the appropriate version from the download page.

It is not yet available through auto-update.
