I can connect to my server, but I cannot see any directories

Post by Crash$Headache » Fri Apr 14, 2006 4:11 am

Hello,

I can connect to my server, but I cannot see any directories. I setup the server, it is running. I set up an account. From another computer I connect and on the server it says I connected successfully. I have also set directories that the account can access for downloads and uploads, but in IE6 i get a blank screen  . Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Crash

Are you in passive mode?

Post by doch83 » Fri Jul 07, 2006 7:36 pm

I had the same problem when my clients were using passive mode (dreamweaver and Windows Explorer). Try unchecking the Passive Mode check box and try again.

Hope that helps!

I’m having the same problem with directories being listed. I did disable pasv mode in internet explorer and it did work. But I am not always at a comp that would allow me to disable pasv transfers so…

What exactly is a pasv transfer and how do I get it to work?

Now having read a few things about FTP…

I would have to conclude that there is something wrong with this version of this ftp server.

Having tried a couple different servers in vmware and actual, I only get this problem with Cerberus. I do believe it is a pasv – active issue, but it has nothing to do with firewall configuration has I have tried it without a firewall being present, windows and/or any other (complete uninstall). (I use Comodo firewall and I know what ports are).
I can’t even get a dir list using 127.0.0.1 on a clean install with windows firewall disabled.

It’s too bad because I really like the interface of this program.

Tried one more time to get this thing to work.

The default or (Auto detection?) does not seem to work.

If I set the ip manually it does work, but this is a bit impractical on a dynamic connection.

Does not work with Opera browser, says commands unknown. This is the browser I use so... this is an issue...

Hope these things get fixed soon.

- but did you get the directory listing to work? I assume you didn't. Even though you have disabled the desktop firewall, there may still be a problem with the router. Does it forward the right ports? I assume you have a practicaly passive range defined in Cerberus, (1025-3500 or something), but check that too. Also, post a log showing the problem, but I am certain the problem is that the passive data connection never reaches the server for some reason. Passive is working like a charm on my own server, so Cerberus is not completely broken at this point.

Never tried Opera... - but post a log.

I think I know what is going on know…

My problem was/is…

I am testing this firewall on a network without a WAN (there is and isn’t), I was expecting that the PASV Auto Detect setting would figure this out and use the default adapters IP (It was trying to use the WAN IP available or not).

Of course it does not do this, if there is no WAN what does this option do?
Other ftp clients seem to handle this different.

Of course that’s why there is the use a different IP option. (Different/Confusing)

But now things work (I understand).

How often does Cerberus check the WAN IP, is it only at startup?
What happens when your IP changes without a clean start?
Will Cerberus detect this? I would guess not, because of the way it reacted to my LAN settings.

Thank you for the responses and the great program.

For those having problems look at what IP is being used (in the log) when passive mode is started. Is it the WAN IP or the LAN IP?

With Firefox acting strange I decided to fire up my other ftp server (Serv-U) just to make sure my ports and firewall were doing there thing.

Pasv Ports: 47001-47021 (Great!!! Now you have my ports and my IP  )

Serv-U:
Firefox – intermittent, sometimes yes some times no..hmm..
Opera – 100%
IE – 100%
FileZilla – 100%

Cerberus:
Firefox – Only list home dir
Opera – command does not work
IE – 100%
FileZilla – 100%

Is Firefox not listening?
IE seems to be
FileZilla seems to be
Opera unfortunately no way to tell

???

I am not all that sure about the auto detect wan feature, I don't use it myself. I believe it checks every 5 minutes or so by querying an external site, but I am not sure, I haven't studied this, as I don't need it myself. My guess is, that if the wan disappears, it can't confirm the ip, but that is no reason to fall back on the internal ip, after all, it might just be the external site being down.

I am not sure how to read the comments you have made to the log. As far as I see, all downloads fails, because Pictures is a directory, not a file. This is a known Mozilla bug (see other articles here), but an extra refresh might do the trick (I don't use Mozilla as client myself).

What is that button that crashes your browser? I guess that is gonna be tough to pin on the server. ;-)

To bad this program has such problems with (seems) every browser except IE.

It’s inconvenient to be at a friend’s house and you want to show him/her a file and you’re required to install a special client.

That pretty much ruins this program for me.

A link to a thread about the Firefox issue from the beginning of 2005.

This forum needs a sticky about known and unresolved issues.

This program sits in my sys-tray only using 500K the best I have seen from any ftp server. Makes it hard to leave.

I think the latest release (2.4) solves some of the problem with Firefox, I am not quite sure.

I agree it would be nice to have some sort of "database" over unsolved problems. Post it under Suggestions.
