Filezilla fails But IE is ok

Post by 1234seng » Sat Sep 02, 2006 3:30 am

It worked well for a while but now I can use only IE6 to use my ftp-server.
Filezilla no longer gets anything ! be it from outside (internet i.e.) or from
inside the LAN. All ports are open and forwarded so router/firewall -prob.
is unlikely. How to track down the fault ?

Post a log file extract with all logging turned on, showing the problem.

Good log. The problem is, that filezilla wants to use passive mode (see www.mdjnet.dk/ftp.html), and then Cerberus is configured to "use a different ip for PASV mode" for that interface. Since this is the only interface you have, you DO want it to identify itself as 83.something, not 192.something, or your FTP server won't work when access from the internet. So, when connecting with Filezilla, you will have to use active (non-passive) mode, as you do with IE. This is no problem, since you are on the LAN.

Configure Filezilla to use active mode, instead of passive mode, when connecting from the LAN, and you are home. I don't remember how to do this in FileZilla, but I know it can do it. It is a connection specific property.

Thank you very much for your help. Unfortunately (or fortunately) the
system suddenly worked again, as before, although I had not yet made
any changes, so it is probably more related to acces providers or modem-
routers or other hardware than to configuration of cerberus/filezilla.
As you suggested I also tried non-pasv mode and that also worked both
from inside the LAN and from the internet. From inside I only tried with
non-pasv so you are probably absolutely right on this issue. In fact the
"inside LAN" usage was only for testing since there I would just use netbios
windows explorer. The Filezilla is on the XP-PC at home and the cerberus
on a Win98-PC in my office, the idea being to have access to all files from
home. In the beginning (quite some time ago) I had trouble downloading
files (filetransfer) and so set pasv in filezilla as it suggests. From now on
I'll try to use non-pasv since that seems to work well.
In cerberus it says it is using port-range 1025 to 3500, so I set Filezilla to
do the same - does it matter ?
My last logfile is quite long. Can it be posted as an attached file ?
From what you said about configuring filezilla to non-pasv I got the
impression that you are using a different ftp-client. May I know which one?
Best regards

Port range: No, it doesn't really matter (as long as you set the range to be large enough), but you can set the range if you wish to fine tune your firewall. I have for instance chosen a range away from any other ports used by my system, including the ephemeral port range used by Windows, which happens to be 1025-3500 or something similar. That way I can allow those ports to go through my router without compromising security for my other applications, and I can set my personal firewall to allow those ports for Cerberus only.
Log file: Don't know about attachments in phpbb, I don't think it is possible - for security reasons probably.
FileZilla: I have used FileZilla a little myself, and I liked it very much. However, I use ftp clients for so little that I usually just type "ftp" in my command prompt. That is sufficient for my needs, but if I need something more, I use FileZilla, but I am no experienced "FileZiller" yet.

Glad it is working again.
